Nous avons pris le ferry (avec notre voiture) l'annee passe.
I think it's great for those who have a lot of time to waste...ah...spend...
and for some it's the closest they'll get to a Fairstar Cruise 
mais sinon, if we hadn't had a cabin for the night crossing, it would have been extremely boring....the seating arrangement is just like an airline (maybe even a bit LESS leg room - by day that room is their movie theatre) and the ship was 2 hours late leaving (we were told it happens often) and the queues enorme to get on board...
But the day crossing coming back was much more interesting where you can wander about and still have somewhere to sit when you get back to where you were.
But for those who haven't their own car, and for whom time is an issue, I agree with tof - better to take a cheap plane flight.
Also that way, you don't have to go to Devonport if you don't want (not that much there) and can spend more time at the better places - par exemple Hobart and Launceston.
How many days do you have to spend there?
We had 8 and only managed to see the east coast....the state may LOOK small, but even most of the highways are winding, narrow and small and it takes ages to get anywhere.
